Let’s Talk Shakes: a good quick option

By June 2, 2017 January 17th, 2018 No Comments

Alright guys, let’s talk about shakes.

Y’all remember ‘Slim Fast’?! I’m pretty sure it was the original shake for most of our generation.  I’ll admit, shamefully, in my college days I committed to doing it (sometimes) with a friend who wanted to shed some weight, what could it hurt, right!?  That summer we did the shake at lunch and then starved until supper (or in my case, scarfed some real food when no one was looking). Besides the fact that it somewhat tasted like chocolate, Slim Fast, in my opinion, was worthless and probably terribly unhealthy. I really don’t even want to think about what was in it!

[Random thought: I always took the title “slim FAST” to mean quick; as in, get slim super fast. But I think the branding may have been trickery.  While everyone ran out to get skinny really fast the title might have just referenced the fact that you were actually FAST-ing]

Thanks for entertaining my theory⬆️⬆️

I enjoy eating, it’s part of life and besides watching my children sleep (they aren’t fighting when they’re asleep) it’s one of the most pleasurable parts of my day. Part of the joy found in eating comes from actually chewing and savoring my food. Prior to PURE, the summer of Slim Fast sort of burned me from ever wanting a shake again unless it was a milkshake, of course.

Having said that summer is here. For our family it’s  full of softball games, swim lessons, dance, cookouts and just plain enjoying being together!  No matter what we are doing, it seems in the summer months lunch time sneaks up and nearly past before I know it. Supper time is usually much the same, sneaking by before I’ve given it the first thought. That, or we eat on the run.

For these circumstances shakes are a great option!

And the good news is they have come a LONG way since the ol’ Slim Fast. There are so many options out there, but let me tell you my favorite is the 360° Complete Shake by Genesis Pure.

It’s just plain great. If you are looking to loose weight this is for you!  If you don’t need to loose weight but, like me, just need quick nutrition the 360° Complete Shake is also for you!  It comes in both vanilla and cacao flavors, which is really all you need.

The Cacao is my favorite by itself.  Vanilla is equally good and can be made into nearly any flavor you dream by adding your own tweaks. I just made a pineapple shake yesterday!

What makes the 360° complete shake so amazing?

Protein and Sugars.

I picked the 3 shakes I hear about most often, here’s how they stack up:

12g sugar, 24g protein > Advocare  (contains Sucralose)

7g sugar, 16g protein > Shakeology

11g sugar, 24g protein > Isagenix

1g sugar, 11g protein> Ideal Shape (contains Sucralose)

1g sugar, 21g protein > 360° Complete by PURE

(ingredient info found on each company website, respectively)

Personally I try to keep my diet very low in sugar. Unless I’m indulging in a dessert I don’t want the extra sugar nor do I want sucralose aspartame or any of the fake stuff. So if I’m going to grab a shake I want to stick to one that will provide my body the proper nutrition while meeting my qualifiers (adequate protein, low sugar, no Sucralose or aspartame).

There are no artificial coloring sweeteners or flavors added, as with all PURE products, which is the reason my family started using them over 2 years ago and just one of the many reasons we still love em’ today!

Here’s my favorite Shake recipe:

  • 1 scoop cacoa or vanilla 360° Complete Shake
  • 1/2 Cup whole milk (you can substitute almond ‘milk’)
  • 1/2 Cup water
  • Ice (a few large handfuls, add as much as you’d like for desired thickness)
  • 1 spoonful Natural Peanut Butter (or other nut butter, the kind you have to stir)
  • Mix in a blender to make it like a milkshake!

Most days I enjoy cooked meals like eggs bacon and avocados or grilled pork burgers loaded up with awesome toppings and tons of veggies.  But a few times a week, I can be found grabbing a shake with a side of spinach salad, much like what you see below. Because sometimes it’s less about the experience and more just getting the nutrition I need as quickly as I can!  Bonus, it tastes great (like a milkshake) and keeps me full!
